Olive Grove

The earliest plantings in the Olive Grove date back to the 1860s when Sir John Logan Campbell unsuccessfully attempted to establish an olive oil industry in the Park. It seems that many of the olive trees (Olea europea) that he imported were sterile and so never produced good fruit. Photographs and records from the 19th Century reveal that the Olive Grove has been considerably thinned from the 5000 trees that were planted there originally. Olive Grove Drive links the Plateau to the One Tree Hill Domain, and is in keeping with landscape architect Austin Strong's scheme of inter-connecting roads forming one continuous grand avenue throughout the whole Park.
