THE OLD AVENUE

The Old Avenue (or The Old Drive)

Today you can still follow the route of Sir John Logan Campbell's original carriage-way, bordering the Cornwall Cricket Club, and winding uphill alongside the Native Arboretum and Memorial Steps to the 'Plateau' area where the Huia Lodge and the Cornwall Park Restaurant stand. Many specimen trees from Campbell's era line this path, including macrocarpa, radiata pine, Moreton Bay figs and puriri. The Plateau was originally intended to be the location of Campbell's own grand mansion. Instead, Campbell never resided in the Park, building his grand home 'Kilbryde' overlooking Judges Bay.
