Memorial Steps

This spectacular flight of stone steps honouring Sir John Logan Campbell was designed by the prominent New Zealand architectural practise of William Gummer and Reginald Ford (Gummer & Ford). A bronze plaque set into the stonework of the steps records Campbell's arrival in New Zealand, his association with Governor Hobson, and his burial on the summit of One Tree Hill. Immediately below the Memorial Steps is the Native Arboretum, planted in the mid-1960s. This semi-circle of native trees provides shade and a fascinating variety of native species.
