HISTORIC POHUTUKAWA

Historic Pohutukawa Tree with Stone Wall

This fine specimen of Pohutukawa (Metrosideros excelsa) dates back to the mid-19th Century.

In photographs taken at the beginning of the 20th Century it already had a smaller version of its current stone surround and was even then a tree of substantial size. It forms the low spreading canopy typical of pohutukawa, creating a shady retreat for Park visitors during the summer months.
